How To Wear 1 Statement Sweater 3 Different Ways

1.) Denim Style: This is such a universal term. Denim can be skinny, casual, or dressy. As a stylist, I love pairing an elegant tailored sweater with an edgy boyfriend jean. This is a good way to show your personality; Sweet with a little twist! If you prefer a fitted skinny jean, make sure the sweater is slightly longer than where the waistband hits on your waist. This helps keep your body proportionate and is the most flattering for your shape.

2.) Skirt Style: The standard go to for office wear is a simple sweater and skirt combination. Fit is always an important factor in any fashion style. Find a sweater or a skirt that is properly fitted by noticing if the length of the sweater or skirt is not too long or too short. This can potentially cut off your body at a weird point which causes an unflattering style for your body shape. Our goal when getting dressed is to elongate our body and show off our strongest features.

3.) Wide Leg Trouser Style: This is a fun yet very classic style. A chic sweater with a wide leg pant with pleating at the waist can be worn to an evening affair as well as a special work presentation. The wide leg trouser adds a different alternative by tucking the sweater in and pairing it with a belt. This option gives something special and a different sweater style.

At HRM our goal is to find the style that fits into your lifestyle by helping you dress for the life you want. This is done by a special program: Sort, Shop and Style. Together we’ll work to clean out and shape up the items in your wardrobe. You’ll learn how to shop constructively and then understand how to style and put your best foot forward everyday.

5 Must Haves When Packing for The Winter Holidays

1. The Not So Little Black Dress: This is your WOW piece, a simple dress that fits your curves in all the right places. Get away from wearing the little black dress and try a bold pink with a simple and subtle pattern or a stunning red. This would be perfect for holiday and party style.

Two Important Tips on getting the perfect dress:

The Right Shape – Find your smallest part and let the dress show off your curves.

The Right Size – If the fit is too tight or too loose it can be unflattering. The goal is to show off your body’s strongest  features.

2. The Perfect Legging: Nothing is worse than feeling uncomfortable in the clothing you’re wearing during long travel and late nights with family and friends. The perfect legging can add comfort while being flattering and stylish.

Three Tips for finding the perfect pair of leggings:

Length – You want to make sure the legging isn’t too short. A good universal legging should come to your ankle and be slim enough to wear a boot with. Having a zipper at the ankle is always a great option and allows you to wear the legging with flats as well as boots.

Material – Make sure the legging is thick enough and not transparent when stretched over your body, but be careful it isn’t too thick where you feel like your wearing scuba gear.

Height on the Waist – An important goal is to always make sure that you are flattering your body. Make sure it hits a flattering part on your body.

3.  The Flattering Universal Neutral Color Sweater:  Staying warm and comfortable while finding a sweater that flatters your figure. the figure friendly sweater is an essential for winter style! Look for a sweater that is a little oversized yet structured to maintain your body shape is perfect to pair with leggings and can be styled as a layer over a dress.

4. BOOTS! BOOTS! BOOTS!  A simple boot can take versatility in wardrobe packing a long way. Look for something that is simple, color universal, metal neutral (not too flashy) and flattering for your legs.

5. Accessories: It is important to keep your luggage light. Packing simple basics and bringing different accessories will keep your traveling holiday style as versatile as possible.

Two tips on packing accessories:

Layers – Some pieces that layer are rings, necklaces and stackable bracelets. These are items that can be easily broken down and layered or stacked to create a different look.

Large Statement Pieces – Transform neutral clothing pieces in to eye-catching styles.

Her incredible experience has helped her build her company to help her clients in a unique way.

Part of being taken seriously in the working world is knowing how to put yourself together. “It’s not just about fashion,” says Heather, “it’s a lifestyle, you have to understand how to do your makeup and hair, and everything that goes along with it.” Heather believes that fitting the part of an executive man or woman is extremely important to their success and happiness.

How It Works

The initial package from HRM is the “Sort, Shop, Style” package. In this package, Heather will go into her clients closet, and see what they have, why they have it, and what they do or don’t wear. In the process of getting to know their closets, she is getting to know her clients as well. “It’s really easy for me to look at someone and tell them what they should wear and what their body shape is” says Heather, “but it’s different when you look at what they actually purchase.” Once she sorts through the clothing and the stores and comes up with a plan for her and the clients to work together, she creates a blueprint of what stores to go to and a wishlist of items to purchase throughout the seasons.

“I like to do my first shopping trip with my clients at Saks Fifth Avenue” Heather explains, “It’s a calmer atmosphere, the staff are amazing, we can have lunch and take our time. I basically offer an all-inclusive in-store experience” The first trip is about two hours, the clothing, shoes, and accessories are already pre-pulled. After the first meeting at Saks, Heather will accompany her clients to their homes and help them style their new purchases. She will place what was just purchased with items that her clients already have, so that there is no double purchasing, and her clients can see how to style their clothing in different ways that are appropriate for their body type. If the client wishes, Heather will also provide personal training, or beauty experts who will come in and style or reshape their hair and show them how to do their makeup.

Heather also has great relationships with many other stores in New York City, including Intermix, Chloe, Trina Turk, Diane Von Furstenberg, and Ted Baker. These stores all contact her when new styles and collections are coming in, allowing her to go into the store, pre-pull, and set items aside. Heather’s relationship with the stores is extremely important for her services. Because they allow her to pre-pull and set items aside, she is able to bring clothing to her clients that are uncomfortable with the shopping experience. These clients can try on new styles in the comfort of their own homes. The most important thing for Heather is to make sure her clients are 100% comfortable with the experience. She likes to build relationships with her clients, and grow with them as they change and go through new experiences in their careers and their families.

The HRM team also consists of a fitness side, beauty side, and stylists. She has staff members completely in charge of everything that goes along with personal training–exercise, and diet–and beauty–hair and makeup. Heather employs stylists below her, who gain experience through her teachings. They accompany her to stores and help her pull, and give her an extra hand. Her plan is to build these stylists up to learn how to deal and interact with clients. Eventually, these stylists will be able to take on clients underneath the company.

Heather’s plan for the future of HRM is to work on building a solid team. “I want to be able to take a step back, and work with my stylists to build their clients, and grow HRM as a styling service and a lifestyle service,” Heather says, “I want to stay with the clients I already have, and I also want to be able to create a team that will do the same.”

If you feel that you need an extra hand when it comes to having better style, bring HRM into your life. Heather Rae Mitchell makes it her mission to cater to your style needs.

Fall 2013 Color & Style Trends

New York City’s fast paced and seasonal lifestyle requires your wardrobe to be as adaptable as the city is diverse. The demands of business, family, and personal life mean you have to be prepared for that stressful boardroom meeting, that fun backyard barbecue, and that chance you’ll need to impress on an evening out. In the fashion world, seasons mean everything! Now that fall is here, it is time to update your style with new trends and flexible apparel.

Fall is one of the best seasons for New York City fashion. It is that sweet moment before the cold, when you are weighed down with heavy layers, and just after the unbearable heat waves, when stripping down is so necessary.

My easy fall wardrobe includes: four neutral colors, two “pop” colors, two trendy styles, and one set of basics.

Fall 2013 Color & Style Trends

Neutral Options. These are the colors to select for your fall basics-camisoles, simple sweaters, sheath dresses, tailored skirts, pant suits, and always include a well tailored white shirt:

  • Dark olive
  • Midnight Blue
  • Chocolate Brown
  • Light Grey
  • Caramel
  • Black
  • Winter White

Pop Colors. These are the colors to select more sparingly, but are necessary for taking your fall wardrobe to the next level:

  • Deep Burgundy
  • Mustard Yellow
  • Crimson
  • Dark violet
  • Deep teal
  • Sea Green
  • Acai Purple
  • Mykonos Blue

Trend Pieces. Buy a few of these of the moment pieces in either a neutral or pop color to mix in with your basics.  Try finding them at lower-priced retailers in case you tire of the look before spring or aren’t sure it’s “you.”

  • Leather Skirt/ Leather Shirt
  • Plaid Capes / blazers
  • Peplums
  • Fur Vest
  • Mixed media (wool coat/ leather sleeves)
  • Paneled tailoring
  • Jacquard
  • Patterns

Shoes. Here are the basics to get you started:

  • Black/ Brown Leather Bootie (depends on Neutral choices)
  • Black/Brown Knee High Riding Boot
  • Flat
  • Pump

With these simple tips, invest in your style with confidence and know you are staying on trend. Always remember the importance of having a wardrobe that goes the distance and will last you years to come.

Example: Crimson hues are powerful statements for the season. Mixing shades of red, such as deep burgundy, with rich blue gives a strong and fashionable look. Pair this look with a neutral base and, voila! You look fantastic

White After Labor Day?

We’re all familiar with the unwritten rule about wearing white after Labor Day. But in this day and age, where fashion knows no rules, is it a fashion faux pas or isn’t it?

As an image consultant and stylist, I’ve thrown out the long-standing rule about no white after Labor Day, and I’ve come up with new ideas to incorporate the color into your fall wardrobe.

White is fresh, crisp and clean. Therefore, it’s really a perfect addition to all wardrobes. A nice alternative for the fall season is winter white.

Looks women should consider:

Pair together a white peplum shirt and black leather skirt. To keep the look from being traditional, add a pop of color. I suggest a suede bootie in the color of the season, Merlot.

But if you’re more traditional and want to keep it that way, wear a Carmel wool wide leg crepe pant, paired with a winter white colored silk button-down blouse. Style your hair into an elegant ponytail. Finish off the look with accessories, a leopard print pointed pump with a complimentary black skinny belt.

Adding colors for the season can easily be done by applying make-up, including strong pigments of gold colors for the eyes and a rich red for the lip.

Looks men should consider:

Some may think it’s more difficult for men to pull off white during the fall, but it’s not! Gentleman, pair together a winter white cable knit sweater and match your top with a slim leg, lightweight corduroy pant (navy or brown are nice choices). Tie together the look with boots in a chestnut brown.

Finally, before putting away your spring/summer white denim, pair it with a hunter green plaid button- down. For a more casual look, wear the outfit with a clean, white tennis shoe, such as converse or Nike.

Use these tips to make your whites extend into the fall!

Smokey Eyes

Make up artist and skin are specialist “Star” gives her secret on how to get the perfect smokey eye..

Use a cream based charcoal color eyeshadow from your lash-line to the crease. Then dust on a matching color. Blend in the eyeshadow using a brush.

Next, line the inside of your eyes with a black khol pencil eyeliner. Smudge the liner on the top and bottom lash-lines for a more dramatic effect.Lastly, use a voluming mascara to complete the look! Always prep your eyes with a flesh tone eyelid primer underneath the eyeshadow for lasting power.

We share tips to transition your summer wardrobe into the fall.

Layers, Layers, Layers

This fall, wear layers to make your summer wardrobe last longer.

Select summer colors such as orange, purple, yellow or cobalt blue that can transition into the fall. Many designers this season will focus on dark merlot and forest green.

Incorporate a leather piece to give your outfit some edge. A pop of pattern can make any outfit stand out. Finally, wear a statement necklace to pull your outfit together!

Summer Essentials: Color, Print, and a Good Wedge!

The sun is finally shining!  Restaurants have opened their patios for dining and the vacations are booked. Now the most important topic is what do I wear to brunch with the girls, and what do I pack for vacation. This summer, focus on making your fashion statement in fewer pieces. Here are a few simple fun and easy summer fashion tips to make your packing load lighter!

Try it!

  1.  Bright Colors: Pops of bright colors look great against tan skin while vacationing. Bold statement clothes means you should wear fewer accessories. Make sure that the outfits are not over accessorized or over styled. A bright color pop can go along way!
  2. Patterns: The big trend this year is patterns. It’s an easy way to make a statement with your wardrobe. Consider wearing patterns that are geometric or tribal. Pairing a pattern bottom with a complimentary bright color top, nail color or even a handbag, offers a cohesive summer fashion statement. For example, what’s perfect for the summer is a simple summer dress that’s an easy to travel piece. Your “notice me dress” should include a mix-and-match of patterns and colors. This lightweight will stands out all on its own!
  3. The Wedge: A simple, stylish and strappy black leather wedge will be the go-to neutral sandal of the summer. The wedge is easy to walk around in, and it’s perfect to show off the perfect summer pedicure from a bright neon polish to the classic summer red.
